This one’s for the Relient K fans. Randomness would like to take a moment to give a virtual celebratory high five to its source of inspiration and our favorite Canadian, Matt Thiessen, for the release of his long awaited solo project, Wind Up Bird. This may end up being an album review, although that was not my intention when sitting down to write a blog on this TV dinner night. First, I just have to say how much I love the album artwork. A superfluity of bright colors…and a bird. A bird that looks a little annoyed with me, the bird watcher. As I take in the beauty of this bird (that also has his eye on me), I easily get lost in the sleepy-hollow folky tunes of this record. Yes, I have it on vinyl because sometimes I want to act like a hipster. Continue reading “The Bird and The Browns”

Going Nuts for a Meal of Oats
“Well everyone’s got something on their mind, and this is my thought at this present time. I’m gonna say what I want, it might not be what you want to hear.”
This is a very random blog, but I make no apologies because this is, after all, Randomness. So I will dive right in. Back in the early days when Randomness was first in existence, I had no trouble with the location of one of my favorite breakfast foods in the cereal aisle at the store. Quaker Oatmeal to Go…has anyone seen or heard of it lately? I think it may have experienced a discontinuation, so putting “to go” in the product’s name was most appropriate indeed. Of course, there are comparable items to be purchased as far as breakfast bars are concerned, but they’re just not the same! When I find an item of high satisfaction, it really bothers me when it is no longer available for consumption. Continue reading “Going Nuts for a Meal of Oats”
From a Grammatical Sabbatical Into a Whole New World
Today commemorates the 10th birthday of Randomness! My baby is growing up so quickly! Who would have thought she would transform from an exclusive virtual magazine produced in a basement into a tidy blog spot on the wonderful world wide web for anyone to discover? A whole new world has opened up for her…what a radical revolution! Time is a comical concept. Of course, we must factor in that indefinite sabbatical between Randomness’s past and present, where virtually nothing was happening grammatically. And we’re actually okay with that reality. Life can be complex and confusing. Sometimes it’s critical to check into a hibernation station on one’s favorite imaginary tropical island to ponder life before one can truly flourish and thrive. The therapeutic results can be astronomical. Continue reading “From a Grammatical Sabbatical Into a Whole New World”
It’s Fun to Have Fun!
A brisk winter walk down a snowy lane is simply breath-taking! It’s so fun to watch the snowflakes as they make their landing to adorn the ground and trees and to kiss the faces of those out and about in the wonderful world of white. I’ve been pining for the sight of those snow-covered trees ever since the last snowflake melted last April. As I am writing this, the snow is falling to an already white ground, creating a wintry atmosphere of which I do not want to let go; however, by the time you are reading this, the snow may be melted and long gone, leaving no trace that it once graced this earth on which we dwell. Such is the plight for those of us residing in southern Indiana. For all you other lovers of winter, let us remain hopeful and keep the spirit of winter alive. Twas the Night Before Christmas…at My House
Twas the night before Christmas when all through the basement, Not a creature was stirring, nor making a statement. The stockings were hung by the piano with joy, In hopes that ol’ Santy Claus soon would bring toys.
The children were nestled all snug in their sleeping bags, While visions of Buddy the Elf eating syrup spaghetti made them all gag. And the girls in their red nightrobes and the parents in theirs of blue, Had just settled their brains for a short Christmas snooze.
When out on the lawn there arose a cry from the pups, I sprang from the bag to see what was up. Away to the window I flew for a find, Tore open the shutters and threw up the blinds. Continue reading “Twas the Night Before Christmas…at My House”
Lobbie the Lobster Goes to the Library: An Original Lobster Tale
Once upon a time, in a land far far away…there was…well…there was this lobster named Lobbie. And he walked into the lobby of a library. Up to the librarian’s desk. Which is where the librarian should have been. But she wasn’t. So…he didn’t know what to do. After contemplating his dilemma, he picked up his briefcase that was filled with…gumballs…and started walking around, looking for the librarian. Needing something to energize him, he opened his briefcase, took out three gumballs, and put them in his mouth. And he started looking for the librarian. He walked up the stairs! And down the hall! And in between the bookshelves! But she wasn’t there! Feeling out of breath, he decided to take the elevator to go back downstairs…and check his e-mail while he waited for the librarian. But alas! Let’s Make Neverland a Possibility, Part 1
“Here we go, off to Neverland!” A snow day means there is a lot of snow outside. So much snow, that it also means there is no school inside. So my sisters and I spent the afternoon outside with the snow, instead of inside at school. We got out our wooden sleds and headed off for a day of fun, adventure, and…flying? We started out at the top of the world and then ended up at the bottom of the world. Actually it was just the bottom of the hill. But. It seemed more dramatic at the time. I felt like Wendy from Peter Pan after he gives her some golden pixie dust and she flies for the first time. There we were: arms in the air, and then…Whoosh! Down the hill we went! The Plight of the Musically Inclined
I love to play the piano. I play the piano at our house with frequency. But sometimes…people at my house just don’t want me to play. I walk into the living room and sit down. I play two notes but then get shot down, which really puts a damper on my spirits. Sometimes, I…ever so slowly…so as not to cause a commotion…walk into the living room yet don’t even make it to the piano bench before I hear someone from the kitchen say the phrase in an annoyed tone, “No! Not right now, Mal!” So. I get frustrated that I must refrain from playing. And it makes me want to just run in there and hit the keys in anger. Playing the piano is an outlet for my soul. Which to Bury, Us or the Bear?
So I heard a story not too long ago, about someone who was being chased by a bear. Now, if you were in harms way because of a bear, and you had a firearm in your possession, the thing to do…would be to shoot it. Right? Well, this person shot the bear…and it died. And this person…was arrested! For saving his own life! Things didn’t turn out the way he thought they would at all. The bear was supposedly an endangered species. I’m sure the guy was probably thinking, “Hey! I was an endangered person! One of us had to go!” He obviously didn’t want it to be himself. “No, I don’t hate you, Mr. Bear, and I don’t wanna fight you…but you took this too far!” Continue reading “Which to Bury, Us or the Bear?”
Baker’s Chocolate…A Snack for the Average Consumer?
Once upon a time…there was this kid. Who went on a youth trip with his youth group in a van driven by his youth pastor. And. The youth pastor stopped the van at a gas station, in order to buy gas for the van. So. The kid. It was just one kid. With his youth group. The kid decided to go inside…and buy himself a snack. So he walked down the whole 3 aisles in that gas station…because he wanted to find the best snack he could possibly find. So the kid, I don’t really know what was going on in his mind, but he…well…he picked up a boxed snack…and bought it. Because he definitely did not believe in stealing.
