Who Is Colony House?

My family drew names for Christmas this year, and my sister gave me an album on vinyl by a band called Colony House.  After I opened it, she asked, “Do you still like that band?”  I was a little confused.  And I wasn’t trying to hide it, I was just thinking slowly.  Who is this band?  Is this The Rocketboys?  I don’t like The Rocketboys!  Maybe she was thinking of another band I like called Humming House?  “I don’t know who this is,” I finally said.  “It’s Steven Curtis Chapman’s sons!”  Light bulb moment.  For the record, I knew they had a band, I was just unaware of the name change from “Caleb” to “Colony House.”  Where have I been?  Caleb and Will Franklin are even on the cover, but as people tend to do, they grew up, and I didn’t recognize them.  All these differences left me blind, blind, blind.

I’m kind of a snob when it comes to music.  I love and appreciate all kinds of music but when it comes to intentionally buying albums, I really only listen to the same handful of bands I’ve been listening to for the past decade or two.  Yes, even after all these years, Relient K, Toby Mac, Switchfoot, and Michael W. Smith are still my favorites.  It’s definitely true that the music you listen to as a teenager impacts your taste in music for the rest of your life.  But I will say, it’s not just their older music I listen to; they’re all still making new music, which makes me really happy.  On occasion, I will accept in someone new to my little group of favorites if they’re fresh, hitting the headlines, spreading like wildfire (at least in my corner of the world that is…they can’t be TOO famous), and simply awesome.  Like for King and Country.  Colony House is just that.  And the fact that they’re Steven Curtis Chapman’s sons…yes!  And they’re from Franklin, TN, so listening to their music means I have Nashville on my mind, mind, mind.

I started listening to SCC when I was in junior high, and his music has been a major influence in my life.  Not only did I love his songs, but I loved his passion for outreach and adoption.  Over the years, I kept up with news about his family, including his precious adopted daughters from China.  And now, I’m enjoying music from his sons who are around the same age as me.  How cool is that?  I love the family aspect of my favorite bands, and I love when things come full circle.  The sounds produced by this hipster indie rock band are just incredible, and I want these sounds hitting my ears all the time.  No doubt this record will be spinning at my house for awhile.  I was hooked after hearing their song “You and I.”  It has an incredibly unique sound, and I could listen to it over and over.  And you can too!  Here’s the link.  If you like it, check out their album entitled “Only the Lonely.”  It won’t be a waste of time, time, time.
