I spent a little time editing my blog site tonight and as I was reading, I came across a few things that inspired me to write. Even though I’ve blogged a lot this month, I’ve gotten a little lackadaisical on the idea of “Randomness.” Crazy, right?! I mean…that IS the title of my blog AND what this whole thing is supposed to be about! So, tonight I must write what’s on my mind and BE RANDOM! So here you go. Backing it up a bit, I always thought the word was “lacksadaisical.” I’m not usually lackadaisical with grammar, but it’s hard not to make mistakes when you hear a random word like that which so often gets mispronounced. I so appreciate having Google at my fingertips, virtually whenever I need it’s mad research skills.
I have a connection to a place in Florida called Winter Springs (it’s a long story). I googled it today out of curiosity, and saw that it’s in Seminole County. The word “Seminole” instantly struck me with a phrase from Relient K’s song “Heartache.” “Seminole masterpiece.” I always thought it was referring to a painting of the Seminole tribe of Native Americans. And then I finally read the lyrics tonight. And…surprise! It’s not “Seminole,” it’s “seminal.” This changes the whole picture for me!
Literally, because in my mind I always saw an idyllic abstract painting of a Seminole riding a horse, kicking up dust across the plains of North America with a beautiful orange, yellow, and blue sky in the background. And now I’m trying to figure out what this song is actually about. It’s a difficult task because the lyrics are kind of hard to understand. A quick Google search shows that many random people have tried to put words to Matt Thiessen’s mumble jumble on a couple songs from Relient K’s most recent album “Air For Free.” Unlike past albums released in compact disc form, this time the lyrics weren’t printed in a nice little square booklet for consultation when stumbling across some troublesome words. Lackadaisical, eh? I guess that’s what makes this album so intriguing.
To put it simply, “Heartache” is about not letting life pass you by. Chase your dreams. Catch a shooting star. Don’t lose track of the precious time you’ve been given. Find what motivates you and embrace a brand new day. Don’t let depression and heartache take over your life. Nothing is hopeless, so never let go of the magic. Give yourself permission to find your own way. In essence, don’t be lackadaisical…just do it. While it’s easy to say, it’s much more difficult to put into practice. What seminal masterpiece can you start painting with your life today?
The sub-lesson of this blog is this: don’t let your surface level observations turn into assumptions that paint a false picture of reality (cue the Seminole masterpiece confusion). When it comes to our perspectives and beliefs, it’s always better to search for the answers than to assume. When it comes to interacting and communicating with the people in our lives, it’s always better to ask for clarification than to assume. Let’s help each other live our best lives possible and not waste precious time making decisions based off of incorrect assumptions.
In order to follow the rule about being random, I had to break a different rule…I was up WAY too late writing. Hopefully I will still like this blog 8 hours from now. Dreaming about Seminoles chasing shooting stars in Wonderland…Goodnight, world.
Here’s “Heartache.” So pretty…
